It’s incredible that Arizona has such a vast and expansive history since it’s the last area to become a state in the continental USA.
My group loves to travel all over and explore historic places in Arizona.
The best part is we don’t gatekeep our findings. Here are 6 memorable places we have been in these last 5 years.

After moving to Sun City 5 years ago, part of our goal has been to explore and learn more about our new home. With that in mind, we have found much more than historic places in Arizona. We have been to all kinds of museums, gardens, memorials, parks, and theaters. Make sure to check out the other incredible places to visit when you’re here.
1-Smurtzwaite House

Tours of the historic Smurthwaite House are available on Thursdays from 10 AM – 2 PM by appointment only.

A short tour of the inside of the house gives you an idea of how the early settlers in Phoenix lived. You aren’t allowed to see the upstairs, but weather permitting, the cemetery holds interesting tales and history of the times.
Insider tip: This area of town is a tad sketchy, so make sure to be aware and lock your car.
2-El Chorro

The Sunday brunch is my favorite as it offers the best pastries and interesting food choices.
This 1937 landmark offers upscale cuisine & mountain views, plus wedding & event space. If you choose to dine here during the ideal weather seasons, make sure to opt for outside dining because their patios (yes, there are more than one) are amazing.
If it isn’t mealtime, make sure to drop by to see the amazing grounds and beautiful architecture. It’s not to be missed.
3-Eisendrath House

The house is open for people to walk through at certain days/times, but the tours are well worth it. Find availability and purchase tickets here for the tour.
Mrs. Eisendrath acquired the 44-acre parcel in the hills above the Salt River in North Tempe on April 23, 1930, and commissioned the home to be built by family friend and architect Robert T. Evans. The home is one of the finest remaining examples of Evans’ skill and mastery of Adobe architecture. It has been restored by the City of Tempe and the tour includes walking through the entire place.
4-Peterson House

The City of Tempe has also restored the Peterson House which sits in the middle of downtown Tempe. It is an example of Queen Anne-style brick architecture in the Salt River Valley. On the tour, you are able to explore the entire house and hear the stories of the 3 families that have occupied the house.
5-Pueblo Grand Museum now called S’edav Va’aki

There are tours but only for groups of 20 or more.
This museum is right in the midst of Phoenix near the airport. It was originally a place of native Indian (Hohokam) dwellings and you can walk among the structures that are still standing.
The museum itself is a gateway to the cultural history of Phoenix and offers many types of programs for young and old alike.
It is the only publicly accessible ancestral village site in the City where you can see a platform mound, a ballcourt, and centuries-old irrigation canals that are among the rare, remaining examples of the Ancestral Sonoran Desert People’s exceptional architecture and engineering skills.
6-Rosson House

Tours are the only way to see the inside of this historic house. Availability and ticket purchases can be found here. The outside of the house is open to the public in Heritage Square.
The Rosson House is one of the historic places in Arizona which is a fully-restored 1895 Queen Anne Victorian house museum that interprets the history of Phoenix.
Insider tip: Make sure to stop by the greatest Neopolitan-style pizza place in Arizona (per my husband) when you visit. It is called Pizzeria Bianco and for those of you foodies, it has won the James Beard Award for its pizza.
